New Spiritual Opportunity:

"Greater love has no one than this, than that he lay down his life for his friend." Laying down one's life for someone else is always the epitome of love. The poets sing of it, the patriots honor it, the citizen teaches it, the lovers promise it, the family lives by it, and the Bible teaches it. Many people think it is meaningless and self-deceptive to give one's life, but we know that love is the heart of God and the highest human relationship. Love requires a willingness to put someone else first. The Bible teaches that sacrificial love. As Jesus lays down his life, he speaks with love, "Father forgive them." On Memorial Day we celebrate our nation and the love patriots have for their country. The willingness to go in harm's way and even give one's life to defend our nation is an awesome sacrifice. Wars are the price of sin and intolerance and certainly are not what God intended for us. Some day we must find a better way to live on this small planet and share what we have. Some day the sacrifice of life may not be necessary. When that day arrives it will be the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven.

A Prayer for the Week:

Dear Lord, Bless our nation and make it a light to the world - a light of tolerance, justice, brotherhood, and peace. We pray for those who defend us this day and families disrupted by the awful cost of war. Teach us peace and bring the men and women of all nations home. Amen

Pray Today that:

  • Servicemen and women sacrificing for us
  • For families broken by wars and children without parents at home
